5th Grade Curriculum

Science

Harcourt Science is our science textbook. It is based on the principles of scientific literacy and provides children with the opportunity to:

• Investigate the natural world
• Learn about interesting, relevant, and exciting ideas
• Link science to math, writing, technology, and the like

It is our hope to nurture students into developing a lifelong fascination with the natural world. Students in fifth grade will study:

• Living systems and their interactions with nature
• Processes that change the Earth
• The Solar System
• States of matter
• Energy and motion

Students will plan and conduct investigations, maintain a science journal and write to communicate what they have learned. We will use the text to support our learning, however a variety of learning tools will be used in science class.

Assessments will be ongoing and performance based. Also, there will be vocabulary assessments as well as some multiple choice assessment. Please feel free to contact us if you are interested in bringing an enrichment lesson to science class.
