Most remained poor, living in crowded slums and working in factories.

The United States acquired Alaska, Cuba, Puerto Rico, the Philippines, and Guam and had a strong military and economy.

3. What was one reason that the United States entered world War I?

Germany began sinking American ships.

4. What happened in 1929, and what was its effect?

The Great Depression began. Factories closed; people lost their homes and jobs; farmers lost their farms.

The Korean and Vietnam Wars

6. What are some of the major problems that exist in the United States today?
