Main Idea A

The people of Central America have different ancestors and speak many languages.


1. Mestizos in Central America have both Spanish and indigenous ancestors. Most Costa Ricans are direct descendants of Spaniards.

2. Although Spanish is the language of business and government in most of Central America, in some countries, such as Guatemala, many languages are spoken, English is spoken in Belize.


Main Idea B

Many young Mexicans and Central Americans move from rural areas to cities in their own countries and elsewhere.


3. Lack of work or low pay in the countryside has forced many people to look for work in the factories and businesses of the cities.

4. Many come to the United States in search of improved opportunities; some become citizens; others plan to return home after earning enough money.
