Northern South America
1. Columbia, Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname, and French Guiana are like the Caribbean culturally.
Peru, Ecuador, and Bolivia
2. Many Native Americans live in the Andes. They speak Quechua and Aymara. In Bolivia, indigenous people outnumber mestizos.
Chile, Argentina, and Uruguay
3. In Chile most people are mestizos. Argentina and Uruguay have very large and diverse cities. In Argentina, flat, treeless plains are well suited for raising cattle. Cowhands called gauchos work herding the cattle.
Brazil
4. Portuguese-speaking Brazil has a diverse population of Native Americans, Africans, and Europeans. Many Japanese live in São Paulo.
