Individual Reading Responses

 

DAY 1

 

1. Write down the title of the book and the author's name. What does the title tell you about the story?

2. When and where does your story take place?

3. What type of book are you reading (fantasy, fiction, realistic fiction, nonfiction, biography, autobiography, etc.)?

DAY 2

 

1. Write down some facts about your story (at least 5).

Next to each fact write your opinion (what you think) about the fact.

2. Describe an important event that has happened, Why did this happen? What happened next?

3. Choose a new word from what you have read. Find out what the word means by:

A. Reading the whole page and using the context of the word.

B. Finding the word in a dictionary.

Write an original sentence with your new word.

DAY 3

 

1. Write down 5 events/things that happened in your story (number them in order). Use context clues / words / phrases ("first", "next", "then" and "last").

2. What does the main character think is important? What does he/she think about it? What event or person caused the character to feel that way or do that?

3. Choose a new word from what you have read. Find out what the word means by:

A. Reading the whole page and using the context of the word.

B. Finding the word in a dictionary.

Write an original sentence with your new word.

DAY 4

 

1. Choose two characters. How are they alike? How are they different? What problems do the two characters have that are the same? How are their feelings the same? How are they different?

2. In one sentence, tell why the author is writing the story you are reading. Then explain how you know this.

3. Choose a new word from what you have read. Find out what the word means by:

A. Reading the whole page and using the context of the word.

B. Finding the word in a dictionary.

Write an original sentence with your new word.

DAY 5

 

1. Describe something a character did. Then explain why he/she did it. What might your character have been thinking?

2. Find a situation or problem from the your story that is similar to one that you have experienced. Explain your similar situation or problem and tell how you solved it?

3. Choose a new word from what you have read. Find out what the word means by:

A. Reading the whole page and using the context of the word.

B. Finding the word in a dictionary.

Write an original sentence with your new word.

DAY 6

 

1. Before Reading: Write down what you think will happen next. List clues that helped you make your guess.

After Reading: Tell what happened and see if you are correct!

2. Choose a new word from what you have read. Find out what the word means by:

A. Reading the whole page and using the context of the word.

B. Finding the word in a dictionary.

Write an original sentence with your new word.

DAY 7

 

1. Draw a picture of your favorite character. Tell as much as you can about what kind of person he/she is. List things he or she did. Would you like to have this character as a friend? Why or why not?

2. Describe an important event in your story. Why did this happen? What happened next?

3. Choose a new word from what you have read. Find out what the word means by:

A. Reading the whole page and using the context of the word.

B. Finding the word in a dictionary.

Write an original sentence with your new word.
