The Snyder Farm was donated to
Rutgers University 12 years ago. Clifford and Melda
Snyder were the original owners before they donated
it to Rutgers. The farm had been in their family
for over 100 years.
|
There are 400 acres on
the farm. 200 acres on one side of the
Locust Grove Road and 200 acres on the
other side of the road.
|

|
Professor Grande now supervises the running the
farm.
|

|
Eight people work on
the Snyder farm.
|
The Research Farm exists to try to help farmers.
They can assist if there is an insect problem or
any other problem in farming. The reasearchers at
the Snyder Research farm study plants.
The farm has 20 to 25 different crops. There is a
pond that is 1.4 acres. The farm can't be sold
because it is a research farm. The only animal on
the farm at the present time is the cat Louie.
Some of the machines on the farm are a potato
digger, corn harvester, and a crop planter.
|
Some of the crops they
grow on the farm are lettuce, tomato,
apples, peaches, strawberries, corn and
many other things.
|

|
The fastest growing crop is radish. One of the
slowest crops are apple trees.
Professor Grande says that none of the plants grow
best, they all grow well in there own way.
Professor Grande said that it is very tough work to
be a farmer.
There is much terracing on the Snyder Farm. A
terrace is a small hill that collects rain water as
it rolls off the hills. The grass filters the water
as it flows into the pond.
|

|
The pond is 1.4 acres
or about 60,000 square feet. The pond was
built by local farmers Frank and Chuck
Kocsis.
|
In the winter it is still busy. There are many
meetings on the Snyder Research Farm. Professor
Grande says that you shouldn't grow anything if you
don't know how. He also says that farming is very
weather related. The farm also helps homeowners
with lawn and garden questions. The future of this
farm is up to the people of New Jersey to
decide.
