The Basket
Factory
Pittstown, New Jersey
I think that the most historical place in
Franklin Township is in my back yard. We now use it as a
storage shed, but in the 1880's it was used as a basket
making factory. The baskets were made out of oak shavings
and they were furnished with linen covers.
The factory employed both men and women when there was a
need for the baskets. In our area the baskets were for
peaches, since at that time we had plenty of orchards.
In time machines took over the making of the baskets. They
could make them for a lot less money and produce more
baskets. I think that people should keep the history of the
factory alive. I am helping to do this by writing this
article. Everyone is invited to come and see the factory for
themselves.
