The most historic place in Franklin Township is The Corner Stone House. This house was one of the original farms in Franklin Township, and is next door to my house. The Corner Stone House was built in the year 1740 by a Quaker family named Large. Large family had 11 kids. The Large family were farmers and owned 20 acres of land. From 1740 to present 2000, eight families have lived in the house. The family living in the house now are the Danco's. Mrs. Danco told me all about her house. The house is built of local field stone, mud, and horse hair. The house has five bedrooms, four fireplaces, and a summer kitchen in the basement. There are also three spiral staircases which were called "Jersey Winders" back then. The basement has a dirt floor and tree trunks for support poles. Plumbing and electricity were added to the house in the 1950's, and the kitchen was added on in 1972. When the roof was replaced each of the beams in the roof had roman numerals carved into them and pegs to hold them together. Mrs. Danco said the house had two names. The names are West Wind Farm and now Corner Stone. The walk in fireplace has a beehive oven inside it. Mrs. Danco thinks this could mean the house was built before 1740, because beehive ovens inside a fireplace were usually built in the 1600's. Also, as far as they know there are no ghosts in the house. Scott |
