I, Zachary, have a basement that is a foundry. In Colonial days it was used for many useful things. We know that it dates back to 1743. They made fires in this foundry. They used the heat from the fire to melt metal. They shaped the metal into useful things. They made rings for wagon wheels. They also shaped it into horseshoes and gun barrels. They even made rings to hold beer barrels together. My Mom, brother, and I went down there to check it out. My Mom showed me where the fire holes were. They had an arch to stuff wood to feed the fire. They built the foundry out of stones and mortar so it wouldn't burn. It was big and probably built somewhere in the early 1700 's. I think it's fun and exciting to have such a basement. This is why I think it's historic! Spring, 2000 |
