Hiram Deats was important because he built a factory which he manufactured and built a lot of things. I believe that the factory was and is still very historic because it was here before 1833! Many farmers came to Franklin Township to buy farming equipment from the factory owned by Mr. Deats. Mr. Deats made plows, reapers, and mowers. I would be very happy to be like Mr. Deats because he helped Franklin Township a lot. His factory was located in Pittstown. He also began a stove casting operation. Hiram's factory was very important to our community.

I think the most historiec site in Franklin is the Grist mill. It was built by Sylverter Probasco during ownership of Pittstown by Charles Hoff, Jr. There were two grist mills. One with an overshot wheel. A new mill (that was owned by the Bodine Lumber Company) was built during the revolution for army purposes. There are a few kinds of mills. A fulling mill is one that hammers cloth until it is cleansed. An oil mill is one in which the seed of flax is proressd to produce linseed oil. A grist mill is used to grind grain to feed live stock. As you can tell mills of all types had an important place in history. Spring 1999 |

Franklin Township I believe the most historic site in Franklin Township the location where Hiram Deat's built his factory, where reapers and mowers were manufactured. This factory was located in Pittstown. Years earlier he began manufacturing plows in Quakertown and later added a stove casting operation. All of this activity helped attract more businessmen to Franklin Township. Most of these businessmen helped serve the local farmers with products they needed. They helped Franklin Township to become a important community. Spring, 1999 |
