Records show Joe Ent Road was private in 1845. There was no name. It became public in 1867. It went to Cliffton's house, but did not go to Allen's Corner as it does today. I interviewed Marvin Ent (Joe Ent's son) who is in his 80's and has lived in Franklin Township his whole life. He still lives on Joe Ent Road. He remembers Joe Ent Road when it was just dirt. He recalls that in 1948 when they laid the road with gravel it only went to his mailbox. When the road was muddy the neighbors got mail in the Ent's mailbox. Mr. Ent recalls everyone shoveling their own roads. In 1948 Franklin Township got their first truck to plow the roads. He remembers one snowy Thursday when the truck got stuck in the snow, Marvin and his cousin were called to help shovel it out. They went along with the truck for the rest of the day till half past four. The road was improved with field stones and truck loads of cinders from High Bridge. The cinders were put in the road so you wouldn't sink. The local feed truck was used to bus Mr. Ent and his friends to high school. The middle seat came out and seats were hung with hinges along the sides. The truck would haul feed all day and also transport the kids back and fourth to school. Kenneth Myers was an ex- freeholder who lived over by Old Franklin School Road. After graduating from high school Marvin Ent farmed Mr. Myers father's land for 8 years. He took such good care of the land that he wanted to pay Marvin for his labor and he decided to honor his father Joe Ent and named the road after him. In 1967 the same year the road was named it was also tarred. I chose to do my essay on Joe Ent Road because that is the road I live on. My family and I farm the land that Joe Ent used to farm back in the 1940's. I hope my family will continue to farm this land for generations to come. Danielle |
