Quakertown was named Fairview until the mid 1830's. It got the name Quakertown from the old Quaker Meeting House located in the center of the town.
There was a 1,000 acre farm in Quakertown. The people who owned it did not want others on their property, but because it was so big it was hard to stay away from it.
The first school house at Quakertown on or near the sight of the present building, was built of logs about 1790. In 1870 a new building was built. It was erected on a small triangular piece of ground leased by Henry Cliffton.
In 1850 a substantial two-story stone building was erected on adjoining grounds, by a stock company known as the Franklin Educational Association. This was designed as an institution for 'higher education' and the building was known as the academy.
I chose Quakertown because it is a very nice place. It has some historic places. It also has schools I can write about, and it is a cool village.

I think the most historical place in my town would be the town of Quakertown. Quakers started to settle in this area around 1720-1730. Also settling in this area were two other religious groups, belonging to the St. Thomas Church and the Bethlehem Presbyterian Church. What I like best about Quaker town, is that when I drive through the town with my dad or on the school bus it is easy to see what an old town was like in the past. The quakers built a lot of their buildings with stone from the area. The old Meeting House still stands near my school. the Quakers started industry in Franklin Township, building grist mills to grind oils and flour for the army during the Revolutionary War. These are some of the reasons I think Franklin Township is a great place to live. Spring, 1999 |
