Histories of Franklin Township

My town is Franklin Township. It is an old town with many historic houses in it. I would like to tell you about my road. My road has three houses on it that are each over 200 years old. Even though they were built in the 1700's, they look much different. Each house was built out of stones that were found on the property when their foundations were dug. Each house began with one main room with a large fireplace or hearth. This room was used as a main living and eating area and a kitchen. The hearths all have a smaller bread oven. The stair case is hidden by a door in the wall by the hearth and led up to a loft up stairs.

All three houses on my road have been added on to by the owners in later years. The largest house is covered by stone only. The smallest house is covered by new wood siding, but the middle house has sort of a stucco covering it. This was done after the original stone building was built because it helped insulate the house from the coldness and from the heat. The walls of this house are open in some places and show old pieces of mud and straw that were used to pack in the space between the stones. This helped insulate even better.

All three houses have very thick walls because of this. These houses are on a road that colonials have always looked for. First they are close to a river so that they could fish and drink and travel. Second it seems to be near where Indians lived and the colonials new that the Indians had the best spots. Indian arrowheads have been found in the fields between the fields and these houses, and on the land that my hose sits on. Third, The houses are on a hill and have have a good view of the land around them.
