The Old Stone Barn

I think the most historical place in Franklin Township is the Stone Barn. I live on Stone Barn Road in Pittstown. My neighborhood is part of a very large farm old farm. This is historical to me because it is my neiborhood.

As I started to research the barn, I discovered it was a very small part of a large farm. In 1845, Peter Sigler owned a 260 acre farm on White Bridge Road in Pittstown. The farm had two grain mills, a lime kiln, a manor house, and a stone barn. In 1854 Sigler sold the hole farm to Jacob West. West bought it for $160,081. West bought it because a railroad was being built along Capoolong Creek, which was one of the farmer’s property lines. In 1923, West sold the farm to five other farmers. Each farmer paid $3,500 for his piece of land.

Today, none of the land is used for farming. Only a few buildings are still standing. One mill burned down from a fire in the orchards, and one mill was turned into a house. The lime kilm is no longer standing. The motor house is now being restored and is for sale. The Stone Barn is still standing and is unused. The original structure has been changed by each new owner. Today, it sits at the top of my road and reminds me of a nother me in history.
