PROJECTS

 




In order to learn more about the Lenape Indians, you are invited to do at least one individual project with a class presentation. You may, of course, do more than one for extra credit. Remember, quality not quantity is most important.

These projects may be worked on during class time (when available), free time, play time or at home.
Below is a list of suggestions for projects. These are only suggestions. If you have an idea which is not in the list, please see me and we will discuss it as a possibility.

SUGGESTIONS

1. Design, make, and use materials for an Indian game. Teach your game to the class.
2. Make a model of a New Jersey Indian village.
3. Plan an Indian garden. include a diagram and a report.
4. Do a report on Lenape canoes or rafts. Make a model.
5. Make a headband with a picture story.
6. Make a drawing or model of several Indian tools. Tell how they were made and used.
7. Weave a mat from paper or grasses. Explain how it was used.
8. Plan an Indian meal. Tell how it was prepared.
9. Make a diorama of Indian village life. Explain your scene to the class with a short report.
10. Create a "search-a-word" puzzle using Lenape names and terms.
11. Make an Indian recipe file. Tell where and how they obtained the ingredients as well as how they prepared them.
12. Make a medicine man's kit using herbs and plants that you can find. Explain how they were used.
13. Make a map-poster showing the route by which Indians arrived in the United States. Tell how they traveled, what they ate, and any other interesting facts you discover.
14. Draw a picture of a well-dressed Lenape brave, squaw, or child. Label each article of clothing. Tell how the clothing was made and what materials were used.
15. Make a model of an Indian home. Prepare a short report on how it was built.
16. Draw a series of pictures showing how deer were used or how corn was grown and used.
17. Do a report on wampum. Make some using beads.
18. Prepare a map showing Indian trails. Label the important places on the map.
19. Make an Indian musical instrument. Examples - gourd rattle, tom-tom, turtle rattle, etc.
20. Draw a series of pictures showing how to make Lenape bread or stew. Try to make some.
21. Make a cup, spoon, bowl, or dipper from a gourd. Tell how you did it.
22. Make a bow and arrow. Tell how it was used.
23. Grind corn into meal using stones. Find out how the Lenapes used corn meal.
24. Make a shadow-box of the inside of a Lenape home. Explain it to the class.
25. Research Indian names on a road-map. Prepare a report on their location and origin.
26. A project of your choice.
