Multilingual Learners

When students are identified as multilingual learners (MLs) through a home language survey, records review, and an English language proficiency assessment, they may receive English as a Second Language (ESL) support from a certified ESL teacher.

In ESL, students take part in activities that build their speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills. Lessons are designed to meet each child where they are in their English learning journey. Teachers use strategies that make learning easier and more meaningful, helping students gain confidence in both everyday communication and academic subjects. Students practice language through science, social studies, math, and English language arts, while also getting support in areas like grammar and phonics. This way, children are learning both the English language and important school content at the same time.

We also make it a priority to celebrate and honor the many languages, cultures, and experiences that multilingual learners bring to our school. By using culturally and linguistically responsive teaching strategies, we make sure every child feels valued and included as an important part of our community.

Throughout the year, your child’s teachers keep track of their progress. In addition, multilingual learners take the state-mandated ACCESS for ELLs test once a year. This test helps us understand how your child is growing in the four areas of language and guides us in planning the best ways to support them. When a student reaches a strong level of English proficiency, along with showing success in the classroom, they may no longer need ESL services. Even then, we continue to check in to be sure they are doing well and getting everything they need to succeed.
