Guidance Program Overview
Franklin Township School Guidance Program Overview
The Guidance Program is designed to help students develop positive self-concepts and effective decision-making skills. Group Guidance, as well as individual counseling, is available to every student in the school district. Group Guidance assists the student in social adjustments, value judgments, and constructive school citizenship. Individual counseling services provide students with assistance surrounding school-related concerns. Crisis counseling services are also provided as appropriate. Counseling services are intended to provide students with short-term, problem-solving intervention when needed. If more intensive, long-term intervention is deemed necessary, parents/guardians will be contacted and a referral to an outside agency will be suggested.
The counselor holds Character Education classes once per week for all middle school students. The 6th Grade Students focus on transition to Middle School, Study Skills, Reading/Writing Help and other areas to foster a smooth transition. The 7th Grade Students focus on Career Exploration including resume building, career research and developing interviewing skills for future employment. The Guidance Counselor assists all 8th grade students in preparing their freshman high school schedules. In addition, 8th Grade Students focus on building study skills, reserach skills and future college/career planning for post secondary success. For more information call or email the counselor with your questions. The counselor visits all K-5th grade classrooms to do guidance lessons throughout the year. Classroom lesson topics include empathy, anger management, impulse control and problem solving, internet safety, and more.
In addition, the Intervention and Referral Service (I&RS) is available to assist students, teachers and parents. Please contact me for specific information on I&RS or the link on my website.
In order for the Guidance Counselor to be effective, it is important that she be made aware of a student's needs as soon as possible. Please do not hesitate to contact the school counselor if you feel your child needs assistance in school.
