What is the Child Study Team?

The Child Study Team (CST) is a multidisciplinary group of professionals who work collaboratively to support students with suspected or identified learning, developmental, emotional, or behavioral challenges. The primary role of the CST is to evaluate students, develop appropriate educational plans, and provide ongoing guidance to ensure each child receives the services and supports they need to succeed in school.

A standard Child Study Team typically consists of the following members:

  • School Psychologist – Assesses cognitive, emotional, and behavioral functioning, and helps design interventions to support the student's mental health and academic success.

  • Learning Disabilities Teacher-Consultant (LDT-C) – Evaluates academic achievement and learning styles, and assists in developing appropriate instructional strategies and programs.

  • School Social Worker – Gathers developmental, social, and family history; provides support to families; and helps address social and emotional needs that impact learning.

Additional professionals may be involved based on the student’s individual needs, including:

  • Speech-Language Specialists

  • Occupational and Physical Therapists

  • Behaviorists

  • General and Special Education Teachers

  • Related Service Providers

Together, the Child Study Team works in close collaboration with families, teachers, and administrators to ensure that all decisions are student-centered, data-informed, and aligned with the student’s strengths and challenges.
